For almost 120 years, the activities of the government of New York State have taken place here. It was one of the most expensive structures ever built, and used the very finest materials and craftsmen. Filled with elaborate carved stone, and lavish use of gold, bronze, and imported stone, the building was constructed by four architects in phases between 1871 and 1899. As architecture, the State Capitol demonstrates four different European architectural styles (romanesque, gothic, moorish, and French Chateau). As a functioning hall for political activity, the State Capitol reveals to visitors how the three arms of elected government work independently. In January through June visitors can watch elected officials debate and discuss the laws of New York State.
The State Capitol connects via tunnel to the Empire State Plaza concourse. It is also surrounded by the variety of European style buildings and landscapes for New York State government.
